This course satisfies requirements for the New Supervisor course under Occupations Code §1701.352. This course is designed to educate law enforcement officers and build foundational knowledge to help prepare them for their role as a new supervisor. This course covers key topics such as leadership fundamentals, communication strategies and conflict resolution techniques, performance management tools, and understanding the challenges of transitioning into a new supervisor role.  This course provides new supervisors with the tools they need to foster a positive work environment, drive team performance, and manage the complexities of their new position.

Key skills developed in the TCOLE course

The #3737 course provides tools to help new supervisors transition from peer to leader, with a strong emphasis on communication, leadership, and ethics. Key learning areas include:

Leadership fundamentals: Learning to transition from an individual contributor to a leader, which requires developing new “soft skills” like empathy, communication, and self-awareness.
Performance management: Setting clear goals and expectations, providing constructive feedback, and holding team members accountable for their work.
Communication: Mastering effective communication techniques for daily interactions, addressing difficult conversations, and resolving conflicts.
Legal liability and ethics: Understanding a supervisor’s legal responsibilities and the importance of leading by example with integrity.
Diversity and sensitivity: Recognizing how to work with and lead employees from diverse backgrounds fairly and impartially.
